Treat Bags can be costly if you just head to the store and buy whatever but there are plenty of ways to save money on them.
Treat Bags/Treat Sacks
- Look for treat bags that are solid colored during holiday clearance, I have found clear, red, white and green ones during Christmas Clearance and orange, yellow and black ones during Halloween clearance. I personally like the clear bags best because they go with any theme you may have for the party.
- Get brown paper lunch sacks and have teh birthday kid color them for the party guests. Not only will it save you money but your Birthday Kid will feel great being able to help out!
Candy/Snacks
- Most candy has a long expiration date look for candy on clearance after holidays like Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day and put it away for your party bags
- If you can not find any candy on clearance or you have missed it, buying in bulk is another option. Oriental Trading is a good place to find Bulk candy, along with BJ’s and Costco type stores.
- Random candy from deals you score, all those times that you need a filler get a candy car as your filler and save them to use in treat bags
- If you are not one to put candy in a treat bag things like raisins, dried fruit, goldfish, can be found for pretty cheap with coupons.
- If your party is around the time of when Wendy’s or McDonald’s is doing their Halloween or Valentine’s Day treat coupon booklets you can get a bunch of them for just $1 each and give each child a couple coupons that they can go get themselves a treat! I know the wendy’s ones come with 10 jr Frosty’s for $1, thats just .10 for each one!
Trinkets:I do not like the junk toys that many places sell for you to put in treat bags, they don’t last and most of the time kids just end up breaking them. And my LEAST favorite treat bag toy is the whistle… ugg that is one treat bag toy that does not even make it in my front door, they can play with it until we get home and then it disappears. Although every parent I have asked about their opinion on the whistles says they can’t stand them yet they give them out, makes no sense to me.
- The Dollar spot at Target is a great place to start, many times I go to Target and they have items in the Dollar Spot marked at 50% and sometimes even at 75%. Things like socks(the cute designed ones), notebooks, pencils, toy kitchen utensils, and tons more. You can get items that the kids will actually use that their parent won’t mind having
- Crayons/Markers/chalk- you can buy a big package of these and divide them up giving each child a few different colors to go along with something like a small notepad.

I started stocking up on candy for the kids parties last year, and it made a HUGE difference!! Saved a ton of money AND was able to put more goodies into the bags. Another thing to look for after the holidays is stuff like temp. tattoo’s, stickers, notebooks, etc, sold in bags. I’ve picked up those items for as little as a quarter a bag and the kids LOVE them!
We are planning a Candy themed party for my daughter next week and I stocked up after Valentines day and Easter, cannot wait to put this party together!
