WOW! Is what you are probably saying as you see the title to this but it is something I feel is important and necessary to bring up. You see money has never been free flowing in our house, a budget has always been needed and money has always been tight. There were times in the beginning of my marriage that we did dumb things like use our credit cards to buy something that we wanted but did not really have the money for and we thankfully have overcome that and for the most part our credit cards are only for emergencies ( I won’t lie hubby and I have occasionally put a dvd or game on the credit card to pay off when the pay check comes in, but we have come to an agreement that if it can not be paid in full when they bill comes in we don’t buy it). But the need to coupon and find deals has always been a way of life in our house, to be honest we’d have very little of what we do have if it had not been for the way we shop.
But there are times when Deal hunting and couponing has to have a place in your life and you have to know where it is. There was a time in our life that if hubby went to the store and bought something with out a coupon I would just about have a heart attack, which would then involve me yelling and an argument all over something as silly as a $1 candy bar. Thinking back on it it sounds so silly that there were arguments over a candy bar, but i kid you not there were quite a few. It sounds crazy I know, and I am sure some of you are sitting here reading this saying YES! I have that in my house and others are saying WOW! Getting mad over a buck! And both of you are right to be thinking that, but the ones who are saying YES! that is my house are the ones who I really want to read this.
It is important to not let your deal hunting and couponing become obsessive, and turn you into a crazy person. Saving money is important and in some cases very much needed to survive but it is very easy to get sucked into the thought process of getting mad if something is bought with out one. There is such thing as too much of a good thing, and yes I know there is no such thing when it comes to actually saving money because you can never save to much, there is such thing when you allow your saving money mind to get mad over something as silly as a $1 candy bar. Honestly the most hubby ever bought was a soda and a candy bar, so like $3 max and he never did it often so it was not a daily thing that he was doing it just randomly like 2-3 a month so literally less the $10 a month. His argument was “$10 is not going to break the bank, we have food the bills are paid so what does it matter?” (and shh do not tell him what I am about to say or I will never hear the end of it lol) But he was right, in all honesty he was. What was him spending $10 freely without the stress of having a coupon or not really going to do with the bills being paid and an over flowing pantry? Nothing, it was not going to hurt us in any way and yet I still would get upset. I did not know until he and I sat down one day to talk about why it stressed me out if he spent $10 what it really did for him. I told him my whole speal of we have a pantry overflowing and I did not see the need to go waste money on a candy bar and his response surprised me when he said “I know I am able to spend it because of what we do save, and sometimes it is just nice to go in grab a treat and not worry. Because of using coupons everywhere else we both deserve to go get a treat once in a while with out stressing if there is a coupon to use or not”. He is right (again don’t tell him I openly said that lol) but think about all the money you save in a week or a month using coupons stressing out everytime if you have a coupon for something will wear you out and getting mad over a buck or 2 is not worth it:)
I just realized how long this post is and that I did ramble quite a bit but I do want you all to remember this: Don’t allow your couponing and saving money to cause arguments or stress you out, saving money no matter how much is something to be proud of, and stressing over a buck or 2 is not worth an argument or the stress
Using coupons and saving money is important but life, happiness and no stress is too
Have any of you done the same thing I used to do? or do you do it now? I would love to hear about it
