So this summer we have done more travel then we have ever done before and I was super excited when Magellan contacted me about trying out their new Smart GPS. I had been using my cell phone for directions and while it works it has its downside, I can not save locations, to a cop it can look like I am texting and then I have to deal with being pulled over and explaining that I am using my GPS and that could be a huge mess.

When the GPS arrived set up was super easy (which is important to me with any device for my car), all I had to do was plug it in the car adapter outlet and turn it on, punch in where I wanted to go and I was on my way. Punching in the address of where I want to go is easy and I can select from other options like shopping, hotels, gas and more easily. It also makes it super easy to search for places on your computer or your smart phone and then send them to the cloud and access them easily from your GPS device.

On our trip to Virginia we had a few issues which had it freezing and turning off on us but realized it was user error (make sure it is fully locked on the window cling dock or you are not going to have a gps telling you where to go ;) ) But being able to find out where the Starbucks were for my caffeine fix on the 12 hour drive was essential to the survival of everyone in the car and thanks to the Magellan Smart GPS I was able to easily find where they were (and then count down the miles). We also used it to hunt down the closest 7-11 because it was free slurpie day and the kids didn’t let us forget.

I was also surprised when I was in the poconos and I punched in Bushkill Falls, when using my Iphone Siri could not find it, and I get that it is in the middle of no where so when they Magellan found it that was another reason to add to my list of loving this GPS.

When the GPS talks to you it is essential that you can hear it, on a road trip we have the kids DVD player going, their DS games, the radio, us all talking and so the car can get quite loud and the Magellan Smart GPS was loud enough that even with all of that we could hear it telling us where to go with out being overly loud and annoying.

Some of the best features of the Magellan Smart GPS are

1)    Trip planning in the comfort of your home.  Use your smartphone (Free iPhone and Android apps) to plan where you want to go, then with the touch of a button send the destinations to the SmartGPS in your car. SmartGPS makes trips safer, easier, and more fun for both you and your children.

2)    Yelp & Foursquare – Discover new restaurants, shops and interesting places, with real-time information from Yelp & Foursquare displayed on the SmartGPS screen. Instantly and seamlessly navigate to those locations on the larger SmartGPS.

3)    Fuel prices. No need to hunt for the lowest fuel prices because SmartGPS will display fuel prices at nearby stations based on your location, directly on the device screen.

4)    Wireless Back-up Camera compatibility – combine Magellan’s SmartGPS with a back-up camera, and you are aware of people, places and things in front of you, behind you, and around you.

  13. Wow just what I need great review how do you get that free

  14. Tiffany F says:

I have hear great things about Magellan GPS systems. Our family has been looking into buying on since my husbands job has him driving all over the place. Using the GPS on our smart phones costs a ton of $$$ on our data plan so maybe we will look into this GPS. Thanks for the review.

  15. Great review on this Magellan GPS system. This would work great when I travel to visit my son who just started college.

  16. Danielle Papsis says:

Knowing the fuel prices in different areas would be great particularly when you travel to know whether to fill up now or when you get where you’re going- something we always debate about.

  17. Thomas Murphy says:

I really need one of these, I always get lost. Thanks for the review.

  18. D Schmidt says:

It is so helpful that it would provide a list of hotels, shops, etc. We recently drove across country and this would have made things so much easier had I planned ahead and purchased one.

  19. Amanda Sakovitz says:

this sounds like a great GPS system, between the foursquare (which I use) and the gas prices (who doesn’t want to save some $ when traveling?) it certainly has gotten my attention!

  25. I love that you an send the info from your smartphone to the gps! And giving you the fuel prices is very handy! Very nice!

  26. Very insightful review! It convinced me enough to add it on my Amazon wishlist. It would be perfect for a few upcoming road trips. :)

  28. Julie Griffith says:

I have a Garmin and now my daughter is driving so she needs a GPS. This would be a good opportunity to try the Magellan. I hope we can win one since I can’t afford one. :)
Sounds like they have many good points.

  29. Billie Smith says:

Such a great review you gave ! My GPS is older and when I tried to update the maps, well something happened and now it doesn’t work.. I understand how the phone navigation is not always so smooth as tat is what I use now. Sometimes it goes nuts and tells you to drive somewhere totally wrong.. sigh…so it would be great to have a chance to win this ! Thanks for giving us all the opportunity !

  30. sherrie gibson says:

I have got one of these but it’s about 4 years old. So a update one would be nice to have. Since they have added a lot of roads in the last four years.

  31. Looks like a great GPS! I love that it searches gas prices and that you can send where you want to go from your phone!

  32. Amy Cates says:

I love that lets you know fuel prices! This looks like a great GPS!

  33. I didn’t know that you could get a navigation system that would tell you the gas prices. I’ve seen ones that show you where the gas stations are but not one that has the price function. Great review this would be an awesome GPS tow own.

  34. This sounds like a great gadget to own. Love the gas price feature. Sure could use this when I’m making deliveries for my job.

  35. Oooooh, I so want this! I love that it can search gas prices. This would be so great instead of mapquesting addresses.

  36. Sounds like a great GPS. I am always getting lost, I could really use this.

  37. Jeana O'donnell-Murphy says:

I like the Wireless Back-up Camera compatibility feature. I didn’t even realize that the GPS makers were putting that on those!

  38. Michelle Tucker says:

I love that not only does this have great navigation, but it can get you to a lowest price fuel station in the area. A MUST for traveling. Thanks so much for the review!

  39. Shelia Browning says:

Holds my hand along the way.

  40. I love GPS devices. Without them I would still be wandering around lost!

  41. can’t live without GPS!

  42. cheryl c. says:

I am so thankful for the awesomeness of GPS. We struggled with directions before we had one, and now things are much easier.
