I love this book. I will tell you why soon. But I think it’s only proper that we start out with a little bit about the author of this great book. Ahmet Zappa is the son of rock musician/composer Frank Zappa. He grew up with a learning disability so now he writes books to show kids how wonderful reading can be. This book is also a tribute to his childhood and a promise to his daughter, Halo. This book really touches home for me as I have three children of my own. Sure this book is about a dad and his daughter, but you could just as easily picture your son, or mom replacing dad as the central characters. That’s what’s so great about this book. The book covers all the things that dad will do for his child. Some of them are needed to survive, others are the fun things in life. One of the parts that really stood out to me was this line… “Because I’m your dad, you will miss a few days of school…. When I take you to new York for a hot dog”. Why did this part stand out to me? Because it is something I have always believed to be true. That creates memories that last a life time. Just going somewhere with your children and living life to the fullest is what that line says to me. There are many parts in this book that can make you think “Am I being that type of parent?” “Was that how my parents were?” And that is another thing that makes this a great book. But the single most important thing about this book is the fact that it is such a good book to sit down with and read to your children. The book is easy to read so it can also help your children develop that love of reading Ahmet was talking about. The book is illustrated by Dan Santat. The pictures are a true work of art. I highly recommend this title if you have children and want a nice easy book to share with them. Go and show your kids that it’s fun to read by sharing “Because I’m Your Dad” with them today!!!!!
