I went to both my Junior and Senior Proms and I can remember my date, the dress I wore, the people I sat with and just about everything from that night. No my proms were not the typical prom image, especially since for my senior prom I had 2 prom dates but it was a fun time and I will always remember them.
Today Disney’s new movie “Prom” opens in theaters, there is no question as to what the movie is about but from the looks of the trailers I can see it bringing back great memories for people who went to prom themselves.
Here are some clips from the movie
I had the opportunity to have a phone interview with the director Jon Nussbaum, which I enjoyed he was such a sweet person and funny as well. Here is the type up of the interview (Some parts are omitted so that it is not so long but for the most part it is taken verbatim from my conversation with him)
Me: When did you know you wanted to be a director for movies?
Joe:…Very Early, basically as soon as I knew there was such a thing, probably 3rd or 4th grade. I always loved all things theatrical, you know putting on plays with friends or acting out stories with my action figures. In fact when I was really little I would actually just run around the house acting out all the characters . When I hit 6th grade I got a video camera and I started making videos and my parents signed me up for every possible course or activities that they could …. and it went from there until I went to film school… and it turned into a career
Me:What was the first movie you directed?
Joe: The first movie I directed was sleepover, that was in 2004.
Me: What is your favorite part of being a Director?
Joe-Honestly my favorite part of the process is the very end, not because i don’t enjoy the rest of it. But I love sitting with an audience … and see if the laugh at to the funny parts the touching parts, just the experience of seeing all this hard work in front of someone who didn’t see this every step of the way get to enjoy the finished product, is my favorite part.
Me:What made you want to direct the Movie Prom?
Joe: A couple of things, I thought that the script was really sweet, and heartfelt and had some good comedy and some characters that I thought an audience could get behind… It was sorta amazing through the process talking to people about their proms…most people can name their prom date in about 3 seconds…women can remember their dress and the colors. I actually went to 5 different proms both alone and with the crew in 2010, and going to the proms compelled me even more to do this movie. … One thing that amazed me was that the cliche idea people have about high school proms and dances that the dance floor is empty and kids are hanging out on either side. At all 5 proms I went to kids were packed from when the DJ pressed play until it was over. It is such and enthusiastic fun experience, and I feel part of it is that it is because it is all the baggage of being teased, not fitting in, who is dating who and competing for grades or getting into college…its like its all almost done, and not saying its all gone but it is so close you are going to get out of High School…. and there is something really special about that type of goodbye party.
Me:Do you remember your prom and what do you remember most bout it?
I remember most of my prom as most people do. I went to 2 proms, my junior prom was you quintessential prom, I was dating a girl through out the year and then we went to prom together….it was the American prom expierence….Senior year was a little more complicated, there was a girl I was dating and we broke up so I invited a friend to go with and then I got back together with the girl right before prom …. then we got back together right before prom and it was fine she was such a good friend that she still came to prom and the girl I got back together with went with who she was agreed to go with…it was a bit awkward but it was still fun …. it was still a fun night, I still look at the pictures and remember all the memories, even the picture of all the guys in their tuxes it brings back memories of good friends and all that good stuff
Me: When people watch the movie in the theater, what do you want them to take away with them?
Joe: Everything that they brought, no one should leave anything in the theater, it is not safe especially with personal information or money in it … no really though I want them to walk out with a big smile on their face, i want them to feel entertained and touched and feel good about the last hour and a half that they spent with these characters… I want them to be entertained.
The Movie “Prom” comes to theaters today, will you be seeing it?
I would love to hear your memories of your prom, prom is such a special time for everyone and I really feel that everyone should have the Prom experience.
