I love the Disney nature movies. I got hooked when I saw my first Disney Nature film- “Chimpanzee”. That movie made me want to learn more about the world we live in and all of the creatures living with us. So when I had the chance to review Disney Nature- Wings of Life, I jumped on it. Wings of life tells the tale of creatures that are responsible for one third of the world’s food supply. Meryl Streep who does an amazing job telling the story narrates this adventure into the wild. Wings of Life follows many different creatures that help pollenate flowers and in turn helps many fruits and vegetables grow. On this amazing journey, you will get to fly with bats in the desert as they hunt for nectar on the flowers of cactuses. While the bats are doing this to survive and feed their young, they are also helping the cactuses thrive in the desert by pollinating them. We also get to follow the hummingbirds as they go through everyday perils. One even gets stuck in something I never thought they could. You have to see that part to get the full feeling of a Hummingbirds life. I do not want to spoil that for you. We also get the chance to follow honeybees and bumble bees as they go through the process that we all need for survival. Yes they do collect the pollen from flowers for their basic survival, but in doing so they also pollenate other flowers as they move from one to the next. I never knew that some bee species were in such danger of being extinct from this earth. Yes, it wouldn’t happen for many years. But just the thought that it could happen shows you the true plight of these creatures. We need bees to survive, something I didn’t fully grasp until I watched this incredible movie.
Now let me tell you about my favorite segment of Wings of Life. It was watching the Monarch Butterflies. You get a chance to discover how far these amazing creatures travel each year. You also find out that their life cycle is very short, which makes what these creatures do even more amazing. Watching the entire life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly in this movie is one of the things that will stay with me. It’s truly amazing what some creatures are capable of. Without all these creatures above, flowers would not be able to thrive, and our food supply would truly suffer. You want to learn about these creatures to fully grasp the magnitude of what they do. Another thing that will really get you going is the musical score. It is one of the most beautiful musical scores you will ever hear. The movie doesn’t have bonus features per say, but you get to see a sneak peek of the new Disney nature film “Bears”. And I must say I can’t wait! Normally no bonus features would bother me, but this movie is helping to raise awareness for some of earth’s most valuable creatures. And it is for a truly good cause. Wings of Life is an amazing journey for all ages. It’s never to late to start learning about earth’s most important creatures. That is something I learned. So go take this journey with the whole family and find out how you can help our friends that are truly “Wings of Life”!
