Last night was quite interesting, I was laying in bed watching The Best of Me movie, planning on calling it an early night and going to bed when all of a sudden I head a scrapping noise and then BOOM! I was sure something caught on fire and my first thought was the woodstove. The smoke detectors all were going off (which we later found out that the water in the pipe that burst in the ceiling in the garage got it wet and that they are all hooked together and that is what set them off). Come to find out it was the one pipe in the garage and it was spewing water EVERYWHERE! Horrible blogger here because I did not take a photo.
We got the water shut off (which as an FYI make sure you know where you water shut off is in your house BEFORE something happens, we bought this house in May and kinda neglected to figure that out and things would have gone mush smoother if we had known where the shut off was for the pipe).
But then of course there was water EVERYWHERE in the garage and it was starting to freeze which would make for a very bad situation to have the water frozen like an ice rink in the garage.
I was trying to use a broom to push the water out of the garage but it wasn’t working and I had talked to my mom and she said to use kitty litter, we had two different types of kitty litter and so I tested her theory and found that the Johnny cat we had made more of a mess but the box of OKO Cat litter did AMAZING! It sucked up the water, did not make a mess when I pushed it across the floor and I am now going to be keeping it on hand for any time that we have an issue with water but I am going to hope that we don’t have to deal with it for a long time as the plumber came today and put in new pipes that are plastic and will expand with the different temperatures!
Easiest way to clean up water
The easiest way to clean up all the water was to pour the box of OKO Cat litter and let it soak up the water, because its made with wood product it soaks it up really well and then use a broom or a shovel to scoop it and toss it where ever you are going to be putting it. We put ours in the woods 🙂

Thank you for this post— it was a lifesaver! A pipe in our unfinished basement burst and we had a bunch of stored furniture down there as well as unused appliances. When we uncovered the mess, I quickly searched on Pinterest what to do and I found your post, otherwise, I wouldn’t have known what to do. On top of using the OKO cat litter to clean up the mess, we had a friend refer a carpet cleaning company to us that performs water damage restoration work and they really helped us out as well. Thanks again!
