How to Feed a family of 5 Healthy Meals for Under $70 a week
I left off yesterday talking about meals and how we spend money on our meals. One thing that is a big chunk of our budget each week is milk, at $3.16 a gallon we go through 4 gallons a week! The kids have a glass of milk with each meal and then we go through 2 bottles of juice a week as well. To cut down on the sugar I only buy 100% fruit juice (none of the Sunny D type drinks here and thankfully my kids like things like cranberry juice), but I also give them 1/2 juice and 1/2 water when they have juice to cut down on the sugar amount as well.
You may be also thinking about my daughter who goes to school 5 days a week, when I pack her lunch she gets the same thing as the other 2 will be eating at home, but she does get a juice box and we have a “snack” basket (filled with granola bars and fruit cups) that she takes one additional item to school with her just incase she is hungrier then what she normally is.
I try to have as much organic foods as I can and that is a challenge on a $70 a week budget but not impossible. Stocking up on organic items I have found is easier to do online then in the store, it is harder to find coupons for organic products (however there are plenty out there, look for our natural and organic coupon round up each week), but with online coupons snagging deals on organic snacks and things like macaroni and cheese I have found easier and better deals on line.
One of my favorite places to look for deals on organic food products is VitaCost, when you sign up for their FREE Rewards program they give you a $10 off $10 purchase coupon and shipping is a flat rate of $4.99, but if you go through Ebates when shopping (an online cash back site) you get cash back for your shopping and it is on your PRECoupon price!
An example of an awesome deal on Organic foods on Vita Cost is this one:
Annies organic Macaroni and Cheese is regularly priced at $1.79 a box (my local store has it for a little more then $2 a box), if you sign up for their FREE Rewards Program and use your FREE $10 off coupon you can buy 6 boxes and pay $5.73 shipped for all 6 boxes! That is more then 50% off the price that I would have to pay in the store 🙂 Add some fruit and you have a quick, easy, healthy, budget friendly lunch 🙂
I also look for Organic Food deals on Amazon, and I have had a lot of luck with finding things like Pirate’s Booty snack bags, Juice Boxes and lunch box snack for really great prices and I buy them and stock up. If you sign up for subscribe and save you can continue to get shipments at the price you paid the first time and that saves money as well.
I know this is a little off the topic of what I am talking about right now but the other day I talked about how getting a deep freezer will save you a ton of money when buying items that you can freeze, when you are talking about storing your non frozen and refrigerated stuff you can use anything from totes to shelving units, i do suggest though that you buy quality shelving units and metal shelving units because they will last longer then plastic ones.
