When my son was just 6 months old and my oldest daughter was 2 I made one of the hardest choices I had to make since being a mom, if I should go back to school and get a degree. At the time hubby was active duty military, working long hours, I was a stay at home mom stretching our budget to the fullest with my couponing skills. At times we wondered what would we do if something happened to his Military career and what would I do once all the kids were no longer home during the day. With much thought and discussion we decided that I would go back to school and get my associates degree which we knew was going to be hard as things were going to change with household responsibilities when I was not always going to be home to make dinner.
This was my 4th go at college, I went right out of High School and attended Penn State, left there joined the Army (was only in a few months, long story short recruiter + Messed up paperwork = going home), went to a local community college when I got back from the Army before having our oldest and then went back again after my oldest was born. None of those times did I ever reach my goal of graduating and life got in the way so this time I promised myself it was going to be different and I was going to get it done!
While in college for the 4th time a life change of getting pregnant with the baby that I miscarried and then our pregnancy with our youngest daughter made our choice a bit more complicated (being pregnant and going to school full time, running a household, and blogging when I could) but it also made us even more firm in our belief that it was the right thing to do.
I went to a local community college and I got my associates degree in Early Childhood education and somehow pulled off getting it in less then 2 years (and I am sure part of that was me acting like a crazy lady at times), but I did it and I was proud of myself for doing it and sticking to it.
But now as my kids are getting older I am thinking what am I going to do when they are no longer home with me because they are in school. Of Course I am going to blog because that is what I love and my job for now but there is always the future “what ifs” that I need to think about. But with looking at going back to school to get my 4 year degree I am learning that transferring my credits might now be as easy as I had hoped and I may end up repeating quite a bit of classes.
If you are a mom and you are looking at going back to school, have faith in yourself! You CAN do it, it will be hard but it is a goal that if you want it you can have it.
