Save Money Bringing lunch instead of buying lunch
An easy way to save money is packing your lunch and bringing it with you to work. Even if you do not use coupons when you buy your lunch needs to pack it it still comes out cheaper on the budget. I have done a price comparison for you based on my husbands eating (and he eats a lot) and now that he is back to work he is bringing his lunch to save us money.
He brings fruit everyday and buying what is in season will save you alot, right now strawberries are in season so he is rotating between strawberries and a banana each day but for the comparison I am going to go with him bringing strawberries everyday.
Bringing your Lunch: – prices are with out coupons at my local store and this is per day what he eats
1 String Cheese
1/2 a container Strawberries
2 drinks (Vitamin Water)
Bag of chips
Break down of prices for the full 5 day work week
2 sandwiches each day =
1 loaf of bread – $2
1 Packages lunchmeat – $5
1 package of Cheese – $3
5 yogurts @ .50 each – $2.50
5 String cheese @ .29 each – $1.45
Strawberries – 2.5 containers @ $2 each – $5
10 drinks (capri sun) – @ .30 each – $3
1 Bag of chips @ .50 each – $2.50
Total for the week- $24.55
Total per day- $4.89
If he were to go McDonalds for lunch (which is the cheapest place near him and no where near as healthy as bringing food from home) This is what he would get
3 McDoubles @ $1 each = $3
1 Large Fry @ $2
1 Drink @ $2
total- $7 per day
Total per week- $35
Now It doesn’t look to be that much at first of a savings because the difference is $10.55 per week but there are 52 weeks in a year and that is a savings of $543.40 per year!
To save even more money instead of using plastic baggies I bought the Rubbermaid 50-Piece Easy Find Lids Food Storage Set for $30 and it will last the whole year if not longer and I do not have to buy plastic baggies to put his food into and I just throw them in the dishwasher at night and reuse them again in the morning.
To keep his food cold and avoid wasting space in the lunch bag with an ice pack we use a PackIt , I love it and it keeps his food cold way past lunch time so if he wants to put a drink in it for the ride home he can and it will be cold by the time he gets in the car to drive home.
If we include the cost of the Rubbermaid containers and the packet into our yearly total we are still sving $493.40 per year by packing lunch instead of buying it out and that is by going to McDonalds, if you go to other places like diners and delis it costs even more per day to buy lunch.
