So I have to be completely honest, when I heard about this movie I thought it was going to be the worst movie ever, however hubby said he wanted to see it so when I was contacted about reviewing it I said sure why not. I was totally hoping that the thoughts I had previously about the movie would be wrong and for parts of the movie I was completely off on my thinking and then there were parts that made me go HUH?!? What?!?.
As a fan of oldies and Rock and Roll the movie started out how I would think it would (for a movie about Rock and Roll), a girl who is moving away from home to find a new life ends up in Hollywood, California looking for a job. She finds herself being mugged (which having that as soon as the poor girl gets to Hollywood makes you go Huh? and it a little awkward) and looking for a job. Of course being a pretty girl she meets a boy who takes her to a “rock and roll” club and she is able to snag herself a job as a waitress. A few twists and turns and we end up with the boy and girl getting involved but not really because she leaves the job and he goes off to be a musician. Somewhere along the line he goes from being all about rock and roll to being in a “Boy Band”, that was out of left field for me. Of course you have the girl back to looking for a job and somehow ends up as a dancer in a night club, again left field. We then hit another curve ball at the end of the movie when the 2 owners of the bar club come out that they have been in love with each other. I personally think this would have made a great side story in the movie, who can’t relate at some point in their life to having feelings for another person they are close to but they just take a while to make it known? Many of us can and I think it would have added a lot to the movie.
Then there is the character Stacie Jaxx, a rock n roll legend who is rude and drunk all the time and acts like hes entitled, now at the end we do find out why and it is because he let his career come before himself and someone he loved, which makes complete sense at the end. Which is a great reminder that when you love someone you should go after them and not listen to others who tell you that you shouldn’t but I digress from the movie.
As a fan of musicals I did really love that there was one song after another and that almost all of the songs I knew and could sing right along with the movie (fairly certain that I did not make hubby’s movie experience all that enjoyable bolting out the tunes but hey I couldn’t help myself). Tom Cruise joined Def Leopard in singing some awesomeness which is a highlight of this movie, the training he went through really shows and is one of the best parts of the movie.
If you can forgo the randomness of this movie, and keep a focus on the story line at hand then this if defiantly a movie that you will want in your house, and who doesn’t want to see Tom Cruise dancing around and signing as a rock and roll star?
