As you all know last month I went to New York to have breakfast with Katie Couric at the Room To Grow Parents Power Breakfast and learn more about the Room to Grow program that is in New York City.
While the breakfast was a ton of fun listening to a discussion with Katie Couric and Dr. Ellen Galinsky on “How to Raise Children to Take on Challenges” the information I learned about the Room to Grow program and what they do for woman is what made the breakfast. Hearing the heartfelt story of one of the woman who have gone through the program and how much their life has changed was absolutely amazing. The power of what people can do to help others when they need the help the most is a great thing that we can all learn from. While we may not be able to make a worldly impact with everything we do it was a nice reminder of how the smallest helpful gesture can change someones life.
What Does Room to Grow Do?
They provide parents who are living in poverty one-on-one parenting support and essential needs for the first 3 years of a child’s life
How does it work?
After being accepted into the program the mother begins meeting with her support person starting with when her third trimester starts and then has a visit every 3 months. At the visits the development of the child is checked and the parents are giving information and help for that stage of their child’s life.
How does one become a part of this program?
If you live in New York City or Boston certain prenatal clinics partner with Room to Grow and getting into the program is based on referrals from prenatal clinics.
How can someone help make a difference and help out Room to Grow?
There are many different ways someone can help, donating baby items such as clothing, hosting a baby shower and other options which you can learn more about here
I think this program is amazing and that the help they give to families who are in poverty that help them get out of poverty are amazing. After hearing the lady speak about her experience in the program I hope that this program spreads nation wide.
