Again I missed last week’s Thrifty Thursday and I hope to get completely on the ball each week, but please bear with me as we are still adjusting to being a family of 5:)
But anywho, One of my favorite things to do with my kids during the spring and summer time is go “picking” for fruits and veggies! As soon as the snow started to melt this winter the kids were asking when we were going blueberry picking again. They loved being able to carry the buckets around their necks and fill them with blueberries. Last year the kids and I were able to go 2 times, each time bringing home more blueberries then we could eat in a month. But the wonderful thing about blueberries (and most fruits and veggies) is that they freeze great. We went picking many times last year, some of the things we picked were: Okra, Peppers, tomatoes, blueberries, and beans. One thing I like about picking is that I don’t have to do the maintenance on the plants, me and plants do not seem to get along very well, I love when my mom gets me plants and each time I hope I won’t kill it and everytime it ends up dead. I don’t even want to attempt fruits and veggies right now because if I cant keep a flower alive I wont be able to keep fruits and veggies going either.
All of the Pick Your Own places we go to do not charge you for picking, they only charge you for what you pick (which is VERY cheap considering the price it would be in the store last year our blueberries were .50 a pound at the one place we went to pick at!) So not only is is a free/cheap place to go as a family and have some great family fun, but you get some sweet deals on produce!
I do not recommend doing so after it has rained a lot especially if you are bringing your little ones along with you. Last year the kids and I had been stuck in the house for a few days due to the rain and on the first non rainy day we decided to go picking. The kids and I ended up covered in mud my van was covered in mud inside and out and the people who were at the gas station I stopped at on the way home must have thought I was crazy because in the back seat were 2 little kids with muddy faces, legs, and arms (Wetwipes only did so much cleaning after they were covered in mud) sitting only in their underwear and me pregnant covered in mud. Now we did have a blast picking that day, despite all the muddy mess that came from it but I would not recommend it and I am going to find a different activity for us this year if we end up in the same situation.
