Tips for Gardening in Small Spaces
Love to garden, but don’t have the space that the typical gardener does? Have no fear! These tips for gardening in small spaces will help you get started on the garden of your dream in no time.
Utilize space properly. Build up instead of out whenever possible. Utilizing vertical space is a great way to double the size of your garden without taking up any more space.
Make sure there’s enough sun. Some plant will only flourish if they have several hours of direct sunlight each day. So, if you plan on growing some tomatoes, make sure you choose your garden spot carefully. The last thing you want to do is waste your time and energy on a garden that doesn’t survive.
Start small. Obviously your garden is going to be small, but instead of overloading it, start small – I suggest easy to grow herbs, or just a few veggies at a time.
Tip: My favorite “easy” plants include tomatoes, basil, onions, strawberries, and peppers.
Use Window Boxes. Pinterest is full of small-space gardening ideas! One of my favorites: Window Boxes. This literally takes up no extra space, because your window is already there. You’re just adding onto it. You know whatever you plant will get plenty of sunlight, and if your window is easy to open, then they’re easy to water!
Tip: Strawberries work well in Window Boxes.
Dwarves are cute. Choose dwarf varieties of your favorites like cucumbers. They’ll take up less space, but are still just as tasty.
Keep it cost-effective. Of course gardens are pretty, but the real reason we garden is to produce delicious plants, right? So, make sure you’re purchasing seeds at the best price possible, and do your research so you aren’t wasting time or money. If your plants end up producing more than you can eat, consider trading with friends for other vegetables, herbs, etc.
