Ways to Entertain Kids on Snow Days
During the winter months, kids can become bored. The weather may be too cold for them to spend too much time outdoors. Although most kids are into electronics and video games you can entertain them by getting them involved in various activities around the home.
One way to keep them entertained is to get out your baking pans. Ask them if they want to help you to make a treat. Choose a treat that is easy to do, yet is more than just mixing something up and adding it to a baking pan. Try to choose something that the kids can decorate afterwards. Cookies, cakes, and other similar cooked foods will keep them busy and entertained in the kitchen.
Another way to keep them entertained during the cold days of winter is by doing some crafts. Pull out the craft bin and start getting creative. Make sure that you have an ample supply of kid friendly scissors, glue, and washable markers. If you need craft ideas, you can search for them on the internet. Remember to gauge the craft according to the age of the children. You can get lots of crafts supplies cheap on Amazon
You could also schedule a movie night or a movie day Make sure that you let the kids decide on what movie they want to watch. Stock up on popcorn, hot chocolate, and even apple cider, or whatever other snacks that the kids like to munch on.
Another twist on movie night is PJ day, when its cold out no one really wants to get out of their pjs so make it a special day where everyone can hang out in their pjs watching movies, playing board games, reading books and what ever else they love to do.
One of my kids favorite things to play is the note game. They write up notes and clues and have a treasure hunt set up for us, then we go around the house and find the notes and clues which lead us to a surprise they have for us. Sometimes its a board game, sometimes a movie they want to watch or sometimes it just ends up in a giant tickle fight 😉 You can also reverse this and have the kids have to find the clues the parents leave around the house 🙂
If your kids are young, you could also plan on spending some time making a snowman, snow angel, or even a snow fort. This will help them to release pent up energy. It would be a good idea to have your movie night right after you have spent time outdoors playing in the snow.
Also when playing in the snow bring out the sand toys, they work great for shaping snow, making snowmen, carrying the snow and its a great way to use your summer toys too!
And last but not least, enjoy them! As parents we only get so many snow days with our kids while they are young. While our lives may be crazy busy and it might not seem like we have time to just stop and play remember that the dirty kitchen floor, piles of laundry, dishes and all the other things and wait as our children will only want to play with us, and build snowmen for so long!
