So I just had to share with you an experience I had yesterday, thinking about it is bringing a smile to my face 🙂
We made Mother’s gift baskets for our local Maternity home, The Shepard’s Maternity House. The Shepard’s maternity house is a place where unwed moms to be who have no where else to go and go and be safe and have a safe place to live while pregnant and after having their baby. They are given help in finding a job, and getting training for jobs and after the baby is born they are given help finding housing and childcare for when they need to go to work. I think it is such an awesome thing that our community has this, there are to many times that young unwed mother’s feel alone. I personally know what it is like to be not married and pregnant, Hubby and I got pregnant with our oldest when he was just 19 and I was 20. At the time we were both not in the best place in our life and I had an awesome friend who her and her mom let both of us stay with her helped us out until we could figure out what exactly we were going to do when it came to where we were going to live after our daughter was born. I can not thank that friend enough for what she did, not only did she help us out that way but she was there as my shoulder to cry on. The Shepard’s Maternity house is these ladies “friend” as my friend was when I needed it, they all have each other to lean on and the help that they need.
I took my 4 year old son with me to deliver the baskets, and the reaction of the ladies that were there when I dropped them off was so heart touching. There were 3 of them that I got to meet and one of the little baby boys (who was so adorable) and they were all so thankful and the smiles that were on their faces when I told they were Mother’s Day baskets for them were so amazing. They were all so sweet and talking with them was a ton of fun. I think it is important that my children see that helping people makes them feel good inside and makes others feel good inside too, I want to teach them that helping others who may not have what we have is something that is important. When we left my son said to me “Mommy I think we made those mommies happy today. Can we come back and do it again?” Hearing my son say that made me smile even more, that he too felt how great it was to make someone else smile.
As couponers we get lots of stuff for free and cheap, and with very little money out of our pocket we can make someone have a great day that they may not have had. For about $30 I was able to make 7 ladies feel special for a day that they deserve to feel extra special on since Mother’s Day is on Sunday. So while you are out doing your coupon shopping and it may not be something you would you use, consider picking it up and using it to make a basket for someone who may not have someone in their life doing special things in their life for them and make their day special, no need for it to be a holiday but any day to make someone feel special.
