This post won’t pertain to a lot of you and normally I do not blog about conferences that I go to or meetings that I attend however this past weekend I attended affiliate summit. My goal was to learn about how to make my blog grow and hopefully in the process make some more money for the hours that are put into it. So I took a class on Small business SEO, figuring knowing about search engines was something I need to work on so people find my site and I left that lesson in utter shock at what the speaker said and I have no found the reason all bloggers get hundreds of e-mails asking us to work for free and do guestposts for us…. they want the link back ok so I knew that part already what I didn’t know is how it was explained to companies of why a blogger would post a link back for them and the answer was rather shocking to say the least.
As you all know this blog is my job, I treat it like a job and I appreciate every reader that stops by each day, and I won’t subjugate my readers to nonsense crap just so a company gets a link back that they want – even if they are offering payment. But back to this speaker….
The speaker told the group of small business people in the room with me that they should look for bloggers because bloggers are always looking for content. Companies seem to think that we bloggers should give a back link for free and since it is a free link it can be a do follow link. (For those who don’t know if a blogger is paid or compensated google’s terms of service are that the link must be marked as a no-follow link. Why bloggers follow google’s terms is because google is where we hope to rank high and get traffic from searches on). He followed that up with bloggers are always looking for content because they can not come up with it on their own. I get e-mails daily asking for me to take my time to write a post for them for free. Now don’t get me wrong there are pr reps I have worked with many times that it is a mutual thing that I will share something for them, but on a daily basis I probably get a minimum of 2-3 e-mails asking for me to write a post about their company for free. When I say that I have a fee they tell me they are not paying bloggers because they don’t want advertising just a mention on their site…. they are getting paid to contact me and work so why don’t they think I should get paid for working too?
Ummm… My list of posts ideas to write is a mile long, the amount of pictures on my camera for recipes that need to be typed up and posted is a mile long, idiots like this guy give me great topics to write about (even if it is out of the normal of what I would normally write about), I have 3 kids, cats, a husband and a brain that doesn’t stop thinking about things I can write about….. but I need help with content (sign). And then to say we will give it for free acting like we don’t know the value of the link back and that basically we are dumb because we would work for free.
I hate to break it to you Mr. Speaker but obviously you have never actually talked to a blogger but we have plenty to blog about and I thank you for the content (with out having to give a company link back and advertise for them for free) that this post has now given me. Bloggers don’t need content from companies we have quite enough of our own, and we are not stupid when it comes to what a linkback does for a company (heck we like it when other blogs link back to us for the same reason) and we don’t work for free, which is essentially what you are wanting from us.
So to the companies out there who have been told this type of thing please erase it from your memory – you will have better success working with bloggers when you realize we do work and we are not stupid and that you are wasting valuable money and time on your own part asking us to do so. Just as a small business person goes to work to make money those of us who blog professionally and it is our JOB do the samething! Work to make a living!
I must also update this because the speaker told companies that were in the room to leave comments on blogs leaving their links in the comment, I hate to tell these companies that they are wasting their time. Each day I get about 100 comments like this that end up directly into the spam box (which is why you see the comment awaiting approval sometimes) because these people want to leave backlinks on my site in the comments for all sorts of garbage and it is not cool. Bloggers delete them and why a speaker would tell someone to do that is beyond me.
