Instructions

  • How to Make Day of the Dead Sugar Cookies
  • In a large bowl or with your stand mixer cream the granulated sugar and butter until it is fluffy. If using the stand mixer it will take about 5 minutes.
  • Once the sugar and butter is creamed together, add in the egg and vanilla extract.
  • In a medium sized bowl mix the flour, baking powder, salt. Use a whisk to mix everything together thoroughly.
  • Slowly add the flour mixture to the sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla extract mixture. Mix everything until well incorporated.
  • Put half of the freshly made dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it out to 1/4 inch thick.
  • Repeat with the rest of the dough.
  • Put the rolled dough including the parchment paper, on a cookie sheet and refrigerate for 10 minutes or longer.
  • Your dough will be chilled and ready to cut and bake.
  • Cut your cookie dough out with cookie cutter, any scraps of cookie dough you can re-roll together to form a new ball then roll it out and placed back in the refrigerator until its cooled and then you can repeat the steps with that.
  • Bake the cookies at 350° for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Transfer the cookies to cooling rack and allow them to completely cool.
  • While the cookies are cooling prepare your royal icing. Thin the Icing to a 20-second consistency.
  • Transfer the royal icing to the pastry bag with the tip in it.
  • Pipe on the outline of the skull and pipe on the bones.
  • Pour the icing back into a bowl and thin the icing down to a 6-second icing. Transfer the icing back into the pastry bag.
  • Flood in the skull with the icing.
  • Allow the royal icing to dry for 24 hours.
  • Using your edible marks color your skeletons with fun patterns.
