Homemade Fajita Seasoning Recipe
I prefer to make my seasoning blends and spice mixes at home instead of buying store-bought seasonings. Making them at home gives me the ability to customize the flavors to what my family prefers.
This homemade fajita seasoning recipe is the one that my family enjoys, but you can change things up a bit if you like more of one flavor than the other when it comes to spices in your fajita seasoning.
This homemade seasoning recipe is perfect for chicken fajitas, shrimp fajitas, and steak fajitas.

Tips for Making Fajita Seasoning
This recipe couldn’t be more straightforward to make: dump some spices, mix them up, and then use them or store them. However, there are some things that can help you achieve the best flavor when making it at home.
- I used American chili powder. Chili powder will vary in flavor depending on where it’s from.
- Be sure to grab quality spices for your seasoning. This ensures optimum flavor. Cheaper seasonings often lack in flavor and quality, making the seasoning taste weak and lacking.
- You can use normal paprika in place of smoked paprika, but I highly suggest smoked paprika as it adds a delicious component to the mixture.Â
- Fine sea salt is my favorite when it comes to this seasoning, but any salt that isn’t coarse salt is great. Coarse salt might make it too salty, so proceed with caution if using it.
Can I Use Fajita Seasoning for things other than Making Fajitas?
Yes! This homemade fajita seasoning doesn’t have to just be used for when you are making fajitas!
- Taco Meat. Use it to season ground beef, turkey, or chicken for tacos.
- Roasted Vegetables. Toss with olive oil and veggies like bell peppers, onions, zucchini, or potatoes before roasting.
- Grilled or Baked Chicken. Rub on chicken breasts or thighs for an easy main dish.
- Shrimp or Fish. Sprinkle over shrimp or firm white fish for a Tex-Mex seafood twist.
- Quesadillas or Nachos. Mix into sautéed onions and peppers or directly into the cheese mixture.
- Soups and Chili. Add to tortilla soup, black bean soup, or chili for extra depth and a Tex-Mex flair.
How to use Fajita Seasoning as a Marinade
This seasoning recipe can also be used as a marinade for meats including chicken and beef. To use this as a marinade for every 1 pound of meat add together 2 tablespoons of fajita seasoning, 1/4 cup olive oil, and 2 tablespoons of lime juice in a bowl. Mix well to combine all ingredients. Add your meat to a zipclose bag and then pour the marinade into the bag. Close the bag and let the meat marinate in the marinade for up to 4 hours and then cook as desired.
Is this seasoning very spicy?
It has a slight hint of heat, but I wouldn’t say it’s spicy. However, if you have a sensitive palate, then you could cut the chili powder to 1 ½ teaspoons.
How do I make Fajita Seasoning Mix Spicy?
To make fajita seasoning spicy, you can add one or more of the following ingredients, depending on your heat preference:
- Cayenne Pepper – Start with ¼ to ½ teaspoon for noticeable heat.
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes – Add ½ teaspoon or more for a slow-building spice.
- Chipotle Powder – Adds both heat and a smoky flavor (try ½ teaspoon).
- Hot Paprika – Swap regular paprika for hot or smoked hot paprika.
- Ground Ancho or Guajillo Chili – Milder than cayenne but adds a rich, spicy flavor.
Can I make more than this recipe makes?
Yes! This recipe makes 5 tablespoons of fajita seasoning. You can easily double, triple and quadruple this recipe so you have it on hand at all times for when you need it.
What other spices can I add to my Fajita Seasoning?
If you want to add more spices you can add garlic powder, oregano, onion powder, and black pepper. When adding them, you want to add equal parts of these spices to equal parts of the other spices you are using.
