How to Serve Air Fryer Apples
There are a few different ways to enjoy baked apples. You can enjoy them for breakfast, lunch and dessert.
- Serve them for breakfast. Baked apple make a great breakfast when paired with yogurt. I prefer greek yogurt. Serve the warm baked apple alongside or on top of a bowl of plain Greek yogurt. The creaminess balances the apple’s natural sweetness and adds protein.
- Serve as a snack. Perfect for a snack, and for a snack we just make them as is and then like to add a topping of whipped cream.
- Serve as a dessert. Top the baked apples with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce for a sweet dessert treat. When having them as a dessert I skip stuffing them with the rolled oats.
Variations of Air Fryer Baked Apples Recipe
There are lots of things you can change up when you are making this recipe to customize them to how you prefer them.
- Skip the Brown Sugar. If you want sweet but without using sugar, use a small amount of pure maple syrup or honey.
- Add nuts. You can add nuts like pecans, walnuts and almonds to the center of the apple or sprinkle them on top.
- Skip the oats. If you don’t want to have oats, you can totally skip putting them in to the apple and just have the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. If you are skipping the oats, you will want to skip the flour too.
- Add add ins. Raisins and craisins are great to add in to the oatmeal filling or on top of the apples.
Tips for Making Baked Apples in the Air Fryer
- Core Without Cutting Through the Bottom. Use an apple corer or knife to remove the core, but leave about ½ inch at the bottom intact so your filling doesn’t fall out during cooking.
- Don’t Overfill. Fill the center cavity with a small amount of oats, chopped nuts, raisins, cinnamon, and a touch of honey or maple syrup. Too much filling can overflow and burn.
- Preheat Your Air Fryer (if needed). Some models require preheating.
- Lightly Grease the Basket or Use Parchment Rounds. To prevent sticking or burning, lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil or non stick cooking spray or use parchment paper with holes (air fryer-safe). This also makes cleanup easier.
The Best Apples for making Baked Apples
When making baked apples, you want varieties that hold their shape well when cooked, have a good balance of sweetness and tartness, and complement warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Here are the best apples for baked apples, ranked by how well they perform:
- Honeycrisp apples. These are one of the best choices for baking because they are firm, juicy, and hold their shape beautifully in the oven, while offering a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness that complements warm spices.
- Braeburn apples. Another excellent option, as their dense texture prevents them from becoming mushy during baking, and their flavor is a well-rounded mix of sweet and tangy, which pairs wonderfully with cinnamon, nutmeg, and other classic baking spices.
- Jonagold apples. This type of apple strike a lovely middle ground — they soften just enough to become tender while still holding their form, and their naturally sweet yet slightly tart flavor makes them ideal for recipes where you don’t want to add a lot of extra sugar.
- Granny Smith apples. These apples are very firm and famously tart, making them a great choice if you prefer a sharper contrast between the fruit and the sweetness of the filling or toppings, and they stay intact throughout the baking process.
- Pink Lady (also known as Cripps Pink) apples. This type of apple is crisp and slow to break down, making them reliable for baked dishes, and their bright, sweet-tart flavor adds a subtle complexity that enhances the overall dessert.
- Fuji apples. This apple type is firm and extremely sweet, which makes them a good pick if you’re aiming for a more naturally sweet dish or if you’re using a filling that isn’t overly sugary, though they can be a bit softer after baking than the others above.
Should I wash the apples before filling them?
Yes, you will need to wash your apples before you do anything to them. You do not want all the germs and bacteria they may have picked up in transport to end up in your food. There are food sprays that you can use to wash them, or you can use vinegar and water to help get the wax coating off them. Just gently wash them with warm (not hot) water and a rag before you move forward.
How do you core an apple for filling?
Wash and dry the apples and place the apples on the cutting board. Use a pairing knife and place the tip of the pairing knife roughly 3/8ths of an inch on one side of the stem of the apple. Push the pairing knife into the apple and rotate it around the top to cut out the core and stem while forming a hole in the middle of the apple. Discard the apple core once removed.
