I love the holidays and it doesn’t matter which one it is, which I am sure you have all noticed by now. Decorating and making fun treats even if we don’t have anything special going on is just something that I love to do and I have done for my kids since my oldest was a baby.
As they have gotten older I still haven’t stopped but they enjoy things that are a bit more involved over a string cheese ghost and they enjoy getting in the kitchen and making them with me. These mummy hand pies are something they love, and when they are making them the kids can pick the flavor they want to make.

Variations of this recipe
Change up how you make the mummy. There are 2 ways to make the handpie look like a mummy. You can top the mummy with either another mummy cut out and then use a knife to make 3-4 small slits on the top and use a fork to press together the outside edges of the mummy. Or cut strips using the excess pie crust and cross the small strips on top of the jam covered cut outs to make it look like a mummy.
Change up the filling. For this recipe I used strawberry jam, but you can change up the jam and use any other flavor jam or jelly including grape jelly, apriocot jam, and cherry fruit preserves. You can also use pie filling including apple pie filling, pumpkin pie filling and cherry pie filling.
Use a Cinnamon Sugar topping. I use just sugar for this recipe but you can use 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of sugar and mix in a bowl to make a cinnamon sugar topping instead of using just sugar.
Use an egg wash instead of melted butter. If you want to use an egg wash brushed on top of the mummy hand pies instead of melted butter you can. It will give you a more golden brown color when baked if you use the egg wash. After brushing the egg wash on top, then you will sprinkle the sugar on top of them mummy hand pie before baking them.

Tips for Making this Recipe
If you are using pie filling for the filling, it works best to make the hand pies with two gingerbread man cut outs instead of using thin strips of dough for the mummy bandages.
Take out your pie crusts about 10-15 minutes before making these to make sure they are at room temperature and don’t crack.

Is there another way that I can bake these hand pie?
Yes, if you do not want to use the oven, you can also make these in the air fryer at 350℉ for 6 minutes.

This recipe will make 12 to 16 mummies on the pie crusts. It will make 12 if using strips of crust for the mummy wrappings on top of the mummy and it will make 16 if topping with another mummy cutout.

How to Store Jam filled Hand Pies
Hand pies with jam fillings can be kept at room temperature for one to two days. Simply place them in an airtight container or wrap them individually in foil or plastic wrap, and store them in a plastic storage container or a zip close bag.
How to reheat Hand Pies
For reheating, the oven or air fryer will give the best results. Using the oven or air fryer 350°F for 8–10 minutes to reheat. While the microwave works for a quick option, though the crust will be softer.
Can I make these in advance?
Yes. You can make these hand pies ahead of time and then freeze them to enjoy later.
