What is Gnocchi?
Gnocchi are small, soft dumplings commonly served like pasta. They are traditionally made with a simple mixture of potatoes, flour, and eggs and have a tender, pillowy texture when cooked properly.
Variations of this recipe
There are a few things that you can change with this recipe to accommodate what you have on hand.
- Use boneless skinless chicken thighs. I used chicken breasts in this recipe, but you can also use chicken thighs.
- Skip the heat. I like a bit of spice, so I add jalapeno peppers. If you do not want any spice, you can omit the jalapenos.
- Use Minced Garlic instead of garlic cloves. You can use 2 ½ teaspoons of pre-minced garlic.
- Add veggies. If you would like to add veggies to the dish you totally can, I suggest cooking them with the chicken. Cherry tomatoes cut in half and baby spinach would be my go to veggies to add.
What kind of gnocchi should I use?
Potato Gnocchi is the most common kind to use. It is the most common shelf-stable gnocchi that you will find in most grocery stores. However, you can use the type you like best.
How can I add more heat to the dish?
For more heat in the dish, you can add crushed red pepper or red pepper flakes in small amounts till you reach your desired heat level.
Do I need to boil the gnocchi in the butter before cooking it?
You do not have to boil the gnocchi in the skillet before cooking it unless you want it to be extra fluffy in texture. If you boil it, though, make sure to take it out of the water and let it drain well before adding it to the skillet so it will pan-fry and get a crispier edge to it.
What Side dishes go well with this recipe?
Here are some great side dishes that pair well with Skillet Chicken and Gnocchi to help you with planning your full meal.
Simple Green Salad. A fresh mixed greens salad with a light vinaigrette helps balance the richness of the chicken and gnocchi. Add cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and a sprinkle of feta for extra flavor.
Garlic Bread or Crusty Bread. A slice of warm garlic bread or a piece of crusty artisan bread is perfect for soaking up any buttery or garlicky bits from the skillet. Focaccia bread is also a great choice to make.
Roasted Vegetables. Try a mix of roasted broccoli, carrots, or Brussels sprouts. Their caramelized flavor adds a nice contrast to the soft texture of the gnocchi.
How to Store Leftover Skillet Chicken and Gnocchi
Allow the dish to cool to room temperature. Transfer the leftovers into an airtight container, and store in the fridge. It will keep for up to 4 days.
Can I freeze the leftovers?
Yes, you can freeze the leftovers. Place the Skillet Chicken and Gnocchi in a freezer-safe air-tight container in the freezer for 1 to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
What is the best way to reheat leftovers?
Warm in a skillet over medium heat with a splash of water or chicken broth to loosen the gnocchi. You can also microwave it in 30–60 second intervals, stirring in between until heated through.
