Strawberry Flavored “Puppy Chow” Treat Mix
My kids love “Puppy Chow” I have made it the “normal” way with peanut butter and chocolate but to change things up a bit and make it more festive for Valentine’s Day is super easy!! Just a few tweaks and tada a new treat 🙂 You can change up the treat to adding your favorite chocolate and sweet candies in the mix along with sprinkles and the colors you want to. You can make it for other holidays too just by changing up the color candies that you put in it 🙂
Strawberry Flavored Puppy Chow Treat Mix Ingredients:
- Pink and White Valentine’s Day candy corn
- Valentine’s Day M&Ms and flavor will work and you can change it up by using the peanut butter ones and the regular ones.
- Pink and Red Sprinkles
- 6 cup Rice Chex cereal
- 12 oz White Melting chips
- 2 cups boxed Strawberry Cake Mix (If you do not want strawberry flavor you can use vanilla cake mix or if you want chocolate flavor you can use chocolate cake mix, or even lemon cake mix would work too!)
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar
Strawberry Flavored Puppy Chow Treat Mix Directions:
There are 2 ways that you can mix it all together. You can use a large bowl or you can use a large zip lock bag. Because it involves melted chocolate I prefer to use a large mixing bowl. If you want to use the bowl method, add the cake mix and powdered sugar in a small bowl and then have a large bowl on hand. If you are using the bag method combine the cake mix and powdered sugar In a large zippered bag and shake to mix well, you will still need a bowl on hand but can get away with using a medium sized bowl.
Put the cereal in a large bowl and then melt the white chocolate chips- you can do this using a double boiler (Go here on how to melt chocolate in a double boiler) or you can melt it in the microwave by heating for 30 seconds then stirring and repeating until melted and smooth. I find using a double boiler to be easier, the chocolate tends to be smoother and its a lot harder to over cook the chocolate with the double boiler then when it is melted in the microwave.
Once the chocolate is melted carefully pour it over your cereal, you might want to grab a pair of oven mitts first as no matter how you melted it the container is going to be hot.
Quickly mix the melted chocolate and cereal to coat all of it, you want to get as much of the coating on it as possible. Now here is where you can do it in a bowl or a bag, as I said i prefer in a bowl. If you are using the bowl method add your cake/sugar mixture and stir to coat over the cereal. If you are using the bag method, pour the cereal into the bag, then the sugar/cake mixture in the bag, zip the bag and shake. (I will say the bag method is less messy but if your chocolate is still hot you will feel the heat on your hands. It needs to still be warm and melted so the mixture sticks to it.
After your cereal is coated with the mixture add in what ever candies you want to, and stir so it is all mixed together, (if using a bowl) or if you are using a bag put the candy in and shake it up to mix it all together.
Store in an air tight container (make sure you sneak some for yourself before sharing it with the family or you might not get any of it 😉 )
