Tips for Making Homemade Milkshakes
Making homemade milkshakes is easy, but there are somethings that you can do that will help make your milkshakes the best ever.
- Whipped cream. When you are making these easy homemade milkshakes, they taste amazing with whipped cream. You can use homemade whipped cream and a whipped cream dispenser or store bought whipped cream, whichever you prefer.
- Let the Ice Cream Soften Slightly. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes at room temperature before blending—it’ll mix more easily and create a smoother shake.
- Chill Your Glasses. Pop your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes beforehand—helps the shake stay cold and thick longer.
- Make It Extra Thick. Use less milk and more ice cream—or freeze your milk into cubes and blend those in.
- Use whole milk. If you want the creamiest milkshake consistency, using whole milk is best. You can use skim milk or 2% if that is what you have on hand, but it will be thinner than if you are using whole milk.
Can I add more of the pumpkin-pie spice?
Yes, if you like your pumpkin-pie milkshake to be more intense in the spice flavor, then at 1/4 teaspoon more of the spice. I would recommend adding it a little at a time, as you can always add but you can’t take away.
What can I add as toppings to this milkshake?
Whipped cream is a must for me when making this homemade milkshake recipe. If you want to fancy things up add some graham cracker crumbs, drizzle of caramel sauce, or even fun fall-themed sprinkles as garnishes. For those who prefer nuts, you can add chopped pecans.
I don’t have pumpkin-pie spice; what else can I use?
You can sub in 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 tsp. of cloves, 1/8 teaspoon of ginger, and 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg in its place. This will make a whole teaspoon of pumpkin-pie spice, so only use half the amount it makes unless you want more spice in your milkshake.
Can I use pumpkin-pie filling in place of the pumpkin puree?
Pumpkin pie filling already contains sugar and spices, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you love very sweet milkshakes. If you omit the pumpkin pie spice, it won’t be overly spiced.
What toppings can I put on a Pumpkin Milkshake?
When making milkshakes I like to have fun with them and add toppings to make my milkshakes a bit on the “extra side” of things and sometimes go over the top. If you want to make your milkshake over the top, try adding some of my favorite toppings to put on my pumpkin milkshake.
