If you are looking for the perfect summer drink this passion fruit mojito is quick and easy to make and perfect for a warm summer evening. Perfect balance of flavors and you can totally make it a virgin drink if you want to without losing any awesome flavor!
What is a Mojito?
A mojito is a cocktail that traditionally consists of five ingredients; white rum, lime juice, club soda, carbonated mineral water or soda water, and mint. To sweeten a mojito you can use a simple syrup or sugar. In this Passion fruit Mojito recipe we have changed things up a bit and added some passion fruit that gives it an amazing and refreshing taste.
What does it mean to Muddle when making a cocktail?
When you are new to making cocktails many of the recipes call for muddling the drink and you might be wondering what it means to muddle a cocktail. Muddling is the technique of mashing the herbs and flavors together. Add the ingredients to the bottom of a cocktail cocktail shaker and using a cocktail muddler gently mash the ingredients (mint and passion fruit in this recipe) gently 2 or 3 times to release the flavors.
If you do not have a cocktail shaker or a cocktail muddler you can use a glass and the back end of a wooden spoon.
How to Tell if Passion Fruit is Ripe
Most of the passion fruit varieties we got here in the United States are the kind that turned purple as they are ripening. If you buy your passion fruit while they are green allow them to ripen until it is a deep purple shade. When it starts to get all very wrinkly that’s when it’s at the peak of its ripeness and that is when you want to eat it or use it in a recipe.
Fresh or Frozen Passion Fruit?
You can use fresh passion fruit puree or frozen passion fruit puree. Pitaya is the brand of frozen, seeded passion fruit puree that I used to make this passion fruit cocktail recipe. You can order it online or find it at Target.
If you are using fresh passion fruit puree then you will want to use 3 tablespoons seeded passion fruit puree.
How to Make a Virgin Passion Fruit Mojito Cocktail
You can easily make this a Virgin drink by replacing the rum with any sparkling clear soda like Sprite. Any clear lemon-lime carbonated drink will work in place of the rum to keep it a virgin drink.
If you are wanting another awesome drink Passion fruit lemonade is amazing and one of our favorite summertime lemonade recipes!
How to Sweeten a Mojito
When you are sweetening a mojito you can use a simple syrup, powdered sugar or granulated white sugar.
