Taco Salad is the perfect easy week night meal, a bed of crispy bibb lettuce topped with homemade taco meat and your favorite taco toppings then topped with lime and cilantro.
Low Carb Taco Salad
Tacos have always been a staple meal in our house. They are super easy to make and everyone in my house loves them! Normally when we have taco night, I make cheese taco shells, and the kids use tortillas and taco shells. But sometimes I am just not in the mood, or i don’t have time to make the cheese shells. Nights like those bring on the low carb taco salad!
I know a lot of you have talked about your family loving tacos too, so I figured the best thing to do was bring you an easy alternative to taco night that was low carb and keto friendly!
Use Homemade Taco Seasoning
I love to make my own taco seasoning but since I started the keto diet I still make my favorite recipe but I leave out the cornstarch – tastes totally perfect still so no worries, when you are making this homemade taco seasoning.
If you are wanting to change up the meat on taco night, instead of ground beef you can totally use the following tasty meat options.
Taco Salad Changes
The great thing about taco salad is that you can fully customize it to fit your favorite taco flavors.
Ground meat. You can use ground beef, ground chicken or ground turkey.
Lettuce. I personally prefer to use bibb lettuce, but you can also use romain or ice burg lettuce.
Taco Salad Toppings
There are so many different things you can add to your taco salad to make it your favorite.
Cheese. Change things up by using Taco cheese, Mexican cheese, Monteray Jack cheese, and Cheddar cheese are great.
Tortilla chips. If you are not sticking to low carb, you can crumble some tortilla chips up and put them on top to give the salad a crunch.
Veggies. For this taco salad recipe I used cherry tomatoes and avocados. However you can change things up and add onions, green peppers, olives, jalapeno peppers, green chilis and more.
Taco Salad Dressing
I use a combination of cilantro and lime as my dressing on this easy taco salad recipe. There are some other dressings that taste awesome too.
What to Serve with Taco Salad
You can serve this southwest taco salad by itself as a meal or you can enjoy it as the main dish. There are lots of tasty side dishes that you can serve with this taco salad recipe.

Taco Salad Ingredients
- ground beef
- taco seasoning
- bib lettuce
- cherry tomatoes
- cheddar cheese
- sour cream
How to Make Low Carb Taco Salad
In a large saute pan over medium heat brown the ground beef and break it into crumbles.
Once the beef is cooked stir in the seasoning and water, cook for 5 minutes.
Rip the lettuce into bite-size pieces then place it on the plates. Top the lettuce with the beef, tomatoes, cheese, and avocado.
Thin out the sour cream with a small amount of water then drizzle the salads with the thinned out sour cream.
Squeeze the lime juice over the salads and sprinkle some cilantro over top.

- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 heads Boston bibb lettuce
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes halved
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese shredded
- 1 whole avocado sliced
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1 lime
- cilantro to taste
