I originally shared this easy chocolate cookie recipe back in 2014, but it was time for some new photos to show you just how delicious they are. They are crispy on the edges, and soft and fudgy on the inside and really are the perfect chocolate cookie recipe.
With soft cookie centers, crisp outer edges, and a flavor that is chocolaty and fudgy, these classic Christmas cookies are not just for holidays in our house. What is a Chocolate Crackle Cookie?
Chocolate Crackle Cookies are a rich, chocolaty cookie that is coated in powdered sugar before baking. While baking the cookie spreads and the confectioner’s sugar coating cracks and crinkles, which is what gives them their name. These fudgy cookies are seriously chocolate perfection and a must for any cookie lover and perfect for cookie exchanges.
Tips and Variations of this recipe
Make them Double Chocolate Crinkle Cookies. If you are wanting a REALLY chocolaty cookie then add in some chocolate chips, add in 1 cup of chocolate chips per batch of chocolate crinkle cookies that you are making.
Don’t press the dough balls down. When you bake thischocolate crackle cookies recipe the cookies will flatten while the cookies bake.
Cookies will be soft when you remove them from the oven. If you bake them too long you will lose the soft and fudgy center, but as they cool the edges will harden up.

You can freeze chocolate crackle cookies before or after baking. It is easy to do either way you want to, so freeze these cookies however you prefer.
You can freeze chocolate crinkle cookies after they are baked, just allow them to cool completely on a baking rack and then place the cookies on a baking sheet and place in the freezer. Once the cookies are frozen store in the freezer in an air-tight container or a zip-close bag.
If you want to freeze the cookie dough follow all of the steps until rolling them in powdered sugar. Roll the cookie dough into balls and place the cookies on a baking sheet and place in the freezer. Once the cookies are frozen store in the freezer in an air-tight container or a zip-close bag. When you are ready to bake the cookies remove them from the fridge and allow them to thaw for 30 minutes. Then roll in the confectioners’ sugar and bake according to the recipe.
Chocolate Crackle Cookies Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
- 1¼ cup granulated white sugar
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup dark unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder

How to make Chocolate Crackle Cookies
Preheat the oven to 350˚ F.
Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer or a large bowl if you are using a hand electric mixer, add the butter and sugar.
On medium speed beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, 2-3 minutes.
Blend in the eggs one at a time, scraping down the bowl as needed.
Mix in the cocoa powder until well blended.
Add the rest of the dry ingredients; flour, salt, and baking powder to the mixing bowl and mix at low speed just until incorporated.
Scoop out a tablespoon of chocolate crinkle cookie dough using a cookie scoop and using your hands shape dough it into 1-inch balls.
Pour the powdered sugar on to a plate and roll the ball into the powder sugar.
Place the cookie dough ball on a cookie sheet. Repeat until all of the chocolate crinkles cookie dough is used up and all of the cookies are on the prepared baking sheets.
Bake 12-16 minutes.
Let cool on the baking sheets for 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
